Original Item, Only One Available. A pairing of WWII U.S. Military Sheepskin Flight Clothing, consisting of a US Army Air Forces D-1 Jacket, and a pair of U.S. Navy M-446A Flight trousers.
The B1 Jacket was a simple lightweight sheepskin jacket, originally intended for use by USAAF ground crew personnel, often working in horrific weather conditions. Both Jacket and trousers exhibit wear from honest use and age. The D-1 featured simplicity of design ensured that the US flier began to use this lightweight jacket on Summer missions and the D1 became a popular, if unofficial, addition to a pilot's kit almost immediately. Since the jacket was far less bulky than the standard sheepskin flight jacket, this proved popular with aviators. The off-white shearling wool and tough redskin leather exterior made this the most practical of all flying jackets. Trim is a Russet Horsehide to cover the seams. Closure is by WWII brass Talon zipper, which is still functional. Jacket is marked size “Medium”. The Jacket exhibits damage (tears to the sheepskin) at the shoulders and the left cuff.
Trousers feature Steel Talon zippers, all of which are functional. Size is marked “40 S” (40 Short). Integral suspenders are intact. One 1” diameter hole to the left hip of the trousers near the zipper pocket.
